Srinagar – Leh to reopen in mid-April 2015

March 9, 2015 at 1:06 am

In a statement issued today by BEACON’s Chief Engineer, Brigadier A K Das, Srinagar – Leh Highway would be reopened by mid-April 2015.

As per Bridadier A. K. Das, “About twenty two feet snow has got accumulated on Zojila top and Sonamrg is under around twelve feet snow. The snow clearance operation in both these roads would start soon once the weather permits. All the measures would be put in place to clear the snow. We need 40 days for the operation to make the road through for traffic.”

A lot now depends on the weather in Kashmir and in particular between Sonamarg and Zoji La, in case this stretch continues to receive heavy snowfall, then route reopening can get delayed. Add to that, initially only the army vehicles will be allowed to cross Zoji La and it generally takes couple of weeks or more for Zoji La to stabilize. During this period, the pass can get closed repeatedly due to landslides and avalanches.

We will continue to post frequent updates on the 2015 road status of Srinagar – Leh Highway on LadakhExpert.com, so don’t forget to subscribe to our email updates.

Kargil Cloudburst, Sriangar – Leh reopens

August 3, 2013 at 10:54 am

A day after the devastating cloudburst and flash floods in Kargil, BRO has managed to restore road connectivity on the Srinagar – Leh Highway. While the road conditions are poor at places in and around Kargil, however traffic is trickling through and Ladakh remains connected via both its land routes to rest of India.

This is welcome news for the locals and army, as well as tourists, who need not cancel or postpone their plans and can visit Ladakh without any issue.

Traffic movement on the Srinagar – Leh Highway has been disrupted, due to cloudburst which took place in Kargil yesterday evening. No loss of life has been reported thus far and the Srinagar – Leh Highway is expected to reopen soon for vehicular traffic.

For all those who are planning to visit Ladakh in the coming days, please keep an eye on the developing situation and do not cancel your plans as of now, unless the situation changes drastically in the coming days.

Update: Srinagar – Leh Highway has reopened for vehicular traffic.

Srinagar – Leh Highway reopens for 2013

April 6, 2013 at 10:11 pm

BRO has fulfilled its promise of reopening Srinagar – Leh Highway today, by reopening it in record time.

Although initially only light vehicles will be allowed to cross Zoji La and chances of the route closing down for a few days in case of snowfall is quite high, it nonetheless goes to show the effort BRO is putting in, to keep this strategic highway open as long as humanly possible.

Even today 100 vehicles from Ladakh crossed over into Kashmir, while 250 vehicles crossed over in to Ladakh, carrying crucial supplies for Ladakh, which has been landlocked for the past 5 months.

Srinagar – Leh Highway to reopen Tomorrow (06-Apr-2013)

April 5, 2013 at 5:44 am

BRO had set a revised date of 5th April, for the reopening of the Srinagar – Leh Highway, earlier this week. However, due to rain and snowfall, road clearance work has been somewhat delayed and hence now the Srinagar – Leh Highway is to be reopened for light traffic a day late i.e. tomorrow, 6th April 2013.

Last year Srinagar – Leh Highway had reopened on the 25th of April 2012 and even at that time it was considered to be pretty early, so despite a couple of minor delays, if BRO manages to reopen the Srinagar – Leh Highway tomorrow (which it should in all likelihood), it would be far ahead of time.

Of course initially the Srinagar – Leh Highway would only be open for light vehicles eg. Cars and SUVs and it would take at least a few days if not weeks for the highway to stabilize enough to let the trucks and buses pass on regular basis.
